“Go Behind the Sound” with the Arenanet Audio Team

September 5, 2017 by Adriane Kuzminski

Three men stand on a stage behind a table full of audio equipment and foley objects.

Now that PAX West is done, it’s time to see what audio highlights you may have missed. If you couldn’t get to the panel about the sound of Guild Wars 2, you’re in luck!

Drew Cady, Jerry Schroeder, and Joseph Clark, part of ArenaNet’s sound team, go into their techniques for creating the game’s incredibly detailed sound design. They break down how they made the sounds for those soothing skimmers and feisty choyas, and they give live demonstrations of their design techniques using a thermin, talk-box, and even a five-foot balloon. And since they have their recording setup handy, why not get the audience involved, too?

You can see the panel here on Twitch (which starts at 21:38), and for more videos about designing sound at ArenaNet, check out their Guild Wars 2 – Behind the Scenes playlist on YouTube.
