Sunday Sound Thought 55 – RIP Sony M10

The Sony PCM-10 portable recorder has a special place for many of us is professional audio. A small device at a decent price that can be and has been used on productions big and small. It seems that Sony has discontinued this product with no direct replacement announced domestically.

My field recording kit includes the M10, a Sound Devices MixPre, and currently a Rode NTG-3. Like many; my M10 was one of the first purchases for the rig, due to its price and versatility. The onboard mics are good enough for many applications, and I have been quite fond of recordings I have made with it.

This isn’t an assertion that the M10 is the best recorder, or that there will never be an equal. The M10 is a reliable, functional, and affordable device that has been useful in my profession and I will be bummed when they are no longer easily available.

Are there any pieces of professional equipment you will miss to see go when it finally bites the dust and you won’t be able to easily get a replacement?

I was looking for it as a gift for myself for new year when I discovered PCM-M10 was discontinued. There’s lots of “portable” recorders out there, but none of them appreciated like M10, or “portable” as “it fits in your pocket” size. The real bummer is, there’s no direct replacement announced on Sony’s side.

I’ve been trying to find one of these in the UK for ages now, but no luck so far :(

Sad news indeed. I have one.
Its very good recorder. For the price, battery life etc.. there is nothing else.
I wish that mine stays alive for next 50 years.

Is there a place that fixes them? Sony or otherwise?
