December's Featured Sound Designer: Frank Bry

December 1, 2010 by Miguel Isaza

Let’s get started with this amazing month. This time the guest is our good friend Frank Bry, sound designer and recordist who will share with us a lot of incredible stuff. Hope you enjoy it!

Bio

Frank Bry founded Creative Sound Design aka: The Recordist in 1986 with digital sound sound libraries for Sampling Keyboards. The company evolved from Frank Bry’s beginnings as a musician in rock bands, as a live sound engineer, and as owner of his own recording studio. Frank relocated from Massachusetts to Seattle in 1989 and began recording his own sound effects and doing sound design for video and radio. He also continued to work as a recording and mixing engineer for several recording artists and album projects. He then expanded into custom sound effects design and recording for leading sound effects CD library developers. In 1995, while working for Starwave Corporation as its lead sound designer, Frank worked on his first game project, Castle Infinity. After leaving Starwave, he did his first free-lance game sound design work for Cavedog’s Total Annihilation.

Using his imagination, creativity, and technical expertise as well as his background in music and sound recording, Frank has been the sound designer for Guitar Hero, Demigod, Supreme Commander, Dungeon Siege, Neverwinter Nights and Nintendo’s Metroid Prime series.

Many internationally known artists and media companies such as Los Lobos, Michael Gettel, Private Music, Narada Media, Microsoft and countless others have included his unique sound elements in their productions.

Frank Bry! No way! Total Annihilation will always have a special spot for me. Between the incredible soundtrack and the varied beeps and bloops of all the different units, combined with the (at the time) innovative 3D rts, I discovered gaming. I want you to know that your work with Chris Taylor on TA is what got me into games, and interested in game audio, in the first place.
