Sound Effects for Charity

January 19, 2013 by Shaun Farley

Charles Maynes and SoundDogs.com have teamed up for two very special sound effects libraries. "Sounds of Modern Conflict" is two volumes of small arms sound effects in 5.1, stereo and mono mixes. Volume 1 is 19 effects of U.S. and NATO infantry small arms weaponry. Volume 2 is 18 effects of Russian small arms weaponry. Both packs are 24 bit/96 kHz. 100% of the proceeds from … [Read more...]

Dynamics Processors = Envelope Generators

January 17, 2013 by Shaun Farley

Charles Maynes' post earlier this month reminded me of an idea I had but never bothered to actually test out...using dynamics processors as envelope generators. If you've ever listened to me rant at all in the last two and a half years I've been active in this online community, you've probably at some point heard me say, "Compressors don't make things louder, make up gain … [Read more...]

Another Sound Effects Library Round-Up

Awesome new libraries continue to pop up. Here are some of the latest releases we've noticed: Echo Collective has just released a new library titled "Motion Textures." This is a design package built for drawing sonic lines and creating gently moving sonic textures. The concept is that consistent sound of friction will translate well to visual design elements that have CG and … [Read more...]

January 8, 2013 by Varun Nair

[This was originally posted a year ago and has been republished because it fits in with this month's theme - Varun] Inspired by Miguel's 'SFX Lab' series, I thought it would be nice to start a series on using conventional plugins to design sounds. With many of us primarily working off DAWs with a mouse pointer and plugin windows, there isn't much  room for 'hands-on' … [Read more...]

A Plug-in Vector Matrix

January 4, 2013 by Shaun Farley

Guest Contribution by Charles Maynes The best things in life are sort of free... Peter Gabriel once described his creative process as being an “X” and ”Y” sort of thinking- Basically trying to segregate his “artistic” thinking from his “technical” thinking. In this DAW universe we live in, we seem to be constantly flipping modes...and often times we want to be able to … [Read more...]

In Memory of Mike Hopkins

January 1, 2013 by Shaun Farley

On Sunday, Michael Hopkins died in a rafting accident in New Zealand. Mike's best known work was with Peter Jackson. He and I worked on the Jackson film "The Frighteners." He won Oscars for his work on "Lord Of The Rings" and "King Kong." Mike Hopkins was as kind, generous, and humble a man as you might hope to meet, and a world class sound editor/designer. Everybody who spent … [Read more...]
