Sunday Sound Thought 33 – So Many Different Ways to be Creative

August 14, 2016 by Shaun Farley

As the year continues, many of these posts will be philosophical in nature. Some will be in contradiction to previous postings. These are not intended as truths or assertions, they’re merely thoughts…ideas. Think of this as stream of consciousness over a wide span…

If you’re not on the Facebook Sound Design group (the one with Curious George holding a boom as the header image…because there are multiple), a recent processing question got a plethora of responses. While there was some overlap and repeat solutions, the sheer volume of possible avenues proposed by people was impressive. Some were specific plug-ins, some were functions built into specific DAWs, and some were simply using basic tools that come with nearly every DAW. To be honest, I’m surprised no one mentioned building a solution (or finding on already made) in Pure Data or Max/MSP (maybe they have by now).

There are very few processes that can only be done through the use of a specific tool. Quite often, there are ways to complete a task that don’t require additional investment. It’s fantastic to be reminded that our creativity is not limited by the tools at our disposal, and that creativity also comes in the way we use (and misuse) the tools that we do have.
