As the year continues, many of these posts will be philosophical in nature. Some will be in contradiction to previous postings. These are not intended as truths or assertions, they’re merely thoughts…ideas. Think of this as stream of consciousness over a wide span…
I’ve kept a notebook for sound items and ideas over the last 6 years. It’s not something I regularly write in. Entries come in random spurts. Sometimes very long spurts, but it’s nothing anywhere near as regular as this little series of posts has been. It can be a rather random collection of thoughts. Notes from AES presentations, reactions to (or ideas spawned from…) things I’ve read, or sometimes completely out of the blue ideas or experiences. I was reading back through some of these notes recently, and I came across this entry:
Interesting synchresis at metro station last weekend. Bird took off at the same time someone started dragging their wheeled luggage over the warning strip. Kind of matched the wings flaps…very interesting sound.
The moment had enough of an impact on me to make me write it down. It’s a good reminder that no matter how far we may try to with associations between sound and image, the real world around us has lots of ideas to steal.
A special thank you to Michel Chion for giving us that little term, “synchresis,” because it’s really nice to have some short hand every now and then.
