Equality is a Necessity

March 2, 2015 by Berrak Nil

This month on Designing Sound we are celebrating the Women’s History Month with only posting contributions from female members of the community. There is so much to say about living in the year 2015 and still needing a special “month” to create awareness about the success, the stories and basically the existence of a whole gender. But as it is evident from the amount of harassment and abuse that took place in the last few months towards the female members of the gaming industry and community, even in the platforms and communities that deem themselves civilized and educated, inequality and patriarchial prejudices towards women are alive and well.

Problematic approach of treating women as if they are less than their male counterparts is a long lived tradition that creates imbalance in all parts of society. While having male allies that are rooting and working for equality in all shapes and forms is important, it is without a doubt more impactful and needed for us to be more visible and more effective in all aspects of life as female members of the society. Because when you see a precedent, when you see yourself represented in a prominently male dominated field (e.g. a recent survey showed that women only make 9% of audio professionals in the game industry), you know that it is possible for you to be there as well.

So, this is a call for all female members of our community. If you would like to contribute and not for just keeping up with this month’s theme but for any other theme and topic that you think would be of interest to Designing Sound, just use our contact form or send an e-mail to shaun {at} this website. Please add your voice, share your knowledge and be visible. Do not hesitate to step forward and contribute in any way you can, whenever you want to. Because not only this community, but the world as a whole, needs the perspectives we can provide, to create an environment of equality and balance.

So, can we call this “Designing Women” month?…

Just to clarify, is the focus on the experiences of women in audio, articles written by women, or both?

Hi Adriane, first and foremost, this month we will only be posting contributions by women in audio, so everything posted will be created by female members of our community.

For those contributions, writers may choose to talk about their experiences as a woman in the industry or they might just want to share their knowledge and wisdom about certain topics related to audio. So the answer to your question would be both:)
