SoundWorks Collection: Gary Hecker – Veteran Foley Artist

May 10, 2010 by Miguel Isaza

SoundWorks Collection has published a new interesting video featuring the great work of a wonderful foley artist: Gary Hecker.

“I’m a creative guy and it’s the creative aspects of Foley that have always appealed to me,” Hecker said. “I also like working with other sound artists and making my clients happy.”

Love the vocal sounds too. Not all foley artists provide that aspect. Great!

Great video. Cant get enough of these fly on the wall videos.
One thing though. Are those horse sounds, and the flying car “whoosh” through the air, for real?
I have the deepest respect for foley artists, and Gary Hecker, and the work they do, but this just made me laugh hard.

It is always nice to see our career in the media and certainly Gary is one of the best. It is a bit disingenuous however to portray him as the SOLO foley artist on the stage. MOST , if not all “A” teams, are just that, teams. I have found in my career ( spanning thirty years and over 400 films ) that a partner is indispensable. An excellent mixer also rounds out the team and allows the highest level of creativity to be achieved. Just thought I would set the record
    straight.

    Gary,
    Nice video!
Its always amazing to view your work, even more amazing to add it it to the mix.
Your work provides the sound track with a backbone and supports every other creative contribution.
Thank You for the wonderful contribution to “Robin Hood”

great artist, great ideas, great sound
As a rerecording Mixer I also do Foley recording at a smaller scale for german TV feature film.
Let me ask you a technical question: How do realise the yellow wipes that cues you in ? I also use Pro Tools for Video Playback and audio recording.

Good luck & many more good ideas for great convincing sounds
    Mike

I love this video and use it as an example when showing interns and students about Foley artistry.

@ Mike Alles you can achieve the wipes on screen for cueing using a program called Streamers. We use it for Foley and ADR cueing.
