Shaun Farley has announced the sound design challenge for December. This one is pretty fun! Take a look:
If there’s one thing that all sound editors/designers have in common, it’s that at some point we are all reduced to speaking in onomatopoeia. There are times where it’s just more efficient to to talk or write in nonsensical gobbledy-gook to communicate about the sounds we’re hearing in our head than to try and break down all the various elements. It’s our version of shorthand. I figured we might as well have a challenge centered around it. To help us out, I’ve enlisted the aid of the creators of the web-comic, “No Need for Bushido.”
In the spirit of whatever end of the year holidays you do or don’t celebrate, we’re going to have TWO winners this month. That’s right, if you enter, you’ve got two chances to win this month. So I don’t want to hear any excuses. Before I go into that though, let’s go over the details of this month’s challenge!
Rules for Challenge #5
No Need for Bushido is a fun comic that’s full of action, comedy and anachronism…really just an entertaining combination. You’re going to need to head over to their site, and look at two of their pages (there are specific pages for this challenge, so don’t rush over there just yet).
- You are to pick either page 360 or page 363; and create the sound effect of Ken’s sword swing and strike (page 360) or Cho’s ground kick (page 363).
- You should at least place your created effects within the broader context of the immediately surrounding panels.
- Dialogue is not required…though it may help sell your design if you choose Ken’s page.
- It may also be to your benefit to read a couple of other pages to get a feel for the personality of each of these characters to better inform your design.
- Your entry is to be uploaded to the SoundCloud group by 5PM (US Eastern Standard Time) on the 26th. [The usual countdown timer will be in the right hand column of this page.]
