Small Motors, New SFX Library from Rabbit Ears Audio

September 7, 2010 by Miguel Isaza

Michael Raphael has announced the release of Small Motors, another great collection of sounds at his company Rabbit Ears Audio. The library includes a lot of different sounds from electric devices, robots, servos, clicks, buzzing machines, etc.

Small Motors. Clicking, whirring, buzzing, grinding, servo sounds and robots. This library is composed of a variety of motor sounds from everyday kitchen appliances and power tools, but it also includes a real robot, whom I found not far from where I live in Brooklyn.

The centerpiece of the library is the Maker Bot 3D printer, an open source 3D printer for rapid prototyping, with 3 different stepper motors inside, makers of lots of fascinating mechanical sounds.

The folks at Maker Bot Industries programmed the robot to do different tasks; each performance of the bot was covered with the following microphones: Sennheiser MKH 60, Sanken CUB 01 (mounted onboard), DPA 4060 (mounted onboard).

The library also includes different sounds made by kitchen appliances and power tools recorded in a studio. Each object was recorded with a variety of performances and perspectives to provide flexibility when designing sounds. Those sounds include:

  • Food Processor
  • Immersion Mixer
  • Commercial Blender
  • Electric Can Opener
  • Commercial Mixer
  • Coffee Grinder
  • Small Food Processor
  • Juicer
  • Dremel Tool (small and large)
  • Circular Saw
  • Power Drill
  • Motorized Screwdriver
  • Articulating Saw
  • Jigsaw

The above tools and appliances were recorded with the following microphones: Schoeps MS Pair,Sennheiser MKH 60, DPA 4060 (mounted onboard).

Small Robots is available now at Rabbit Ears Audio. There are several purchasing/quality options:

  • SMALL MOTORS HI-RES $50 – (24 Bit 96 kHz | over 700 sounds | 1.27 GB download)
