Little Q&A with Tim
Designing Sound: What motivated the swish library?
Tim Prebble: I’ve had a small collection of swishes in my library for years & they kept getting reused in various forms, so I realised I needed a new library with a far larger range of sounds… Coincidentally neighbours to my studio here in Wellington are FUSE Circus and I had often heard the manager Tom rehearsing with whips, so I approached him to perform for me…. I also spent a few weeks collecting props & got strange looks a few times in hardware stores when testing out the sounds of various objects!
DS: Where did you record?
Tim: I knew I needed a big quiet room – big enough to literally swing a cat (although no cats were involved) so I rented the foley room at Park Road Post, which has a high enough ceiling to use the whips indoors…. The first 3 hour session was exhausting, I could hardly lift my arms by the end of it – some props only make a sound when moved very fast. We then did a few shorter pickup sessions with other props on following days.
DS: Any hints on the next library?
Tim: LIBRARY 3 is going to be a real challenge, as it must be recorded outdoors in a very quiet location on a still night. I think we will need a safety officer too as the props are a little dangerous. But the exciting aspect is that we’ll only get one chance to record each prop – they will literally be unique performances! Serious fun!
The library looks great, and I personally love the way Tim shows it, sharing nice videos, cool photos of the season and very detailed info of the library showing the love and desire he puts in this project.
