I resonate with your post so much! I’m about to finish my last year of studying Contemporary Art Practice at university and struggling to keep my enthusiasm. However your article reminded me of why I work with sound with all its unpredictability, surprises and enjoyment. It also re-activated my listening.

I’ve got several years of recordings amounting to about 120GB of sounds, almost all of which were found, not planned. Always have a recorder with you, and make sure it’s practical. Having a rig with innumerable inputs, a boom pole with a 5.1 mic on the end is all well and good, but is it as useful as the stereo recorder you can carry in your back pocket? My daily rig is a typical, inexpensive stereo x-y recorder with 2 XLR inputs and a small super-cardioid condenser on a tiny compact handle. It’s almost always with me and has just the right balance of flexibility between being able to capture stereo ambiences and mono sources with decent cancelation.

The “Just Record It, Dammit” part especially resonates, I find myself in that mindset all the time and need to let go sometimes and just record a sound with what I have handy!

The phrase, “Oh, great sound” is either said or thought at least daily. I had a project this weekend that needed some found sounds. I settled on sounds from an ER and crowd noise from an MLS soccer match. Both were recorded with an iPhone, because that’s all I had at the time. They worked fine for the purpose.
