He embraced the future while respecting the past.

His zest for life led him in so many directions.
Our NAMM visits were always a window on a wonder filled world.

I picked up the phone just now to say hello
Now I find myself saying goodbye to one of the good guys.

Knowing you in this world has made it better.
Your passion for audible naturalness stays with me.
It informs my designs and your appreciation encouraged me.

Goodbye my friend.

He was bright, brash, opinionated, and had an Apple Newton on a belt clip – a true symbol of the ubernerd that he was. I mentored Jory, teaching him the art of sound design, while learning from him about the latest gadget or Pro Tools plug-in. He could talk about SCSI alone for hours on end. I was one of the guys that Julian mentioned above that helped him build his dream studio in Fairfax – it was a wonderful space, and he used it to the hilt.

Jory was hilarious, with an ever-present twinkle in his eye. As I picture him in my mind now, it is always with his eyes crinkled nearly shut, his mouth in a huge smile as he guffawed and chortled loudly.

I have so many memories of Jory – they tumble and pass through my mind. I remember him running for mayor of Fairfax. Of him strumming away on his acoustic guitar. Of him wearing that purple Studio.Jory.Org t-shirt to every GDC, AES, and NAMM show. Of him sitting in my foley studio for hours on end, taking notes and helping Marnie Moore as she walked foley for the film Adaptation. Of him working with the game industry in Norway, and living out of AirBNB rooms when he was back in Marin. Of him complaining loudly and vociferously about anything and everything that Apple did, yet owning all their products.

And I remember laughing my ass off with him many, many, many times.

It’s been painful to write about Jory. I’ve been putting it off for many days now, moping about the senselessness of his death. We opened our Monday morning audio production meeting with a one minute moment of silence, as we all visualized sending Jory on his way with love and light.

Farewell, my friend. You left too damn soon.

He seemed to have a personality of an instantaneous friend and generously offered his time to enjoy the sculpture park together. He made time in his busy work schedule even though we were not yet friends. He explained and organized things, thought of what we would want to see in the city and arranged it through other people. He was a very social and happy person, who seemed comfortable with us, even though we only knew him a day. He shared himself openly, his personal life and his political views, his strong convictions and love for Norway. He was adventurous and on the fly made plans with us to go sledding down the 7km Olympic trail. We enjoyed ourselves and enjoyed his company. By the end of the 2-3 days we spent together, it felt that he was a friend, someone we almost knew well. Although we cannot compare to others who knew him for a long time, who wrote about Jory above, we feel very sad loosing a friend, because Jory had the ability to become a good friend in the matter of hours.

Sounds like a great guy. Sorry for his loss.

I’m very saddened by his passing.
