So true James! I have just begun to really dig into the UE4 audio system, and I am very much impressed by the jump between UE3 and how robust UE4 is.

While not always as flexible don’t count out the built-in audio tools that come with game development engines. Unreal 4 has some pretty cool stuff for instance!

Middleware tools like these, for free and connected to a run time engine? Its crazy not to dive into it. One thing I would add, is that if you are really new to audio production then be sure to work with linear tools for a while as well. Jumping into non-linear sequencing without grasping linear sequencing is a tall order. Many of us spent a lot of time in MIDI, Audio Editing and Synthesis before getting into Interactive sound. Diving directly into a Game Audio Middleware tool as advanced as FMOD Studio or Wwise without having a strong set of fundamentals in audio production first is difficult at best. Im not saying its a prerequisite, but its not too dar from it. Song production, Film Sound, Synthesis, Field Recording, etc will make Middleware tools make a lot more sense in my opinion. Great article Berrak!

It’s a good time to get into game audio middleware. The availability and depth of resources and tribal knowledge is huge. Great to see you raising awareness (and thanks for the shout-out).
