I’m sharing this with my audio communication students, especially the part about the intern with over-blown expectations. I also always suggest that my students take business classes, so it’s nice to have reinforcement from the field.

I can definitely relate on the notion that a degree can be a double edged sword, especially when it’s from one of the many private schools that popped up in recent years. I got an Audio Engineer Degree 13 years ago at the SAE Institute in Munich (I still think it was well worth it). However, the overall quality of these private schools in my area has declined to a point that I don’t even want to mention it in my resume anymore.

I would add though, that getting an education in this field, also always presents an opportunity to connect with lots of people who might be able to get you gigs in the future and build a solid network before you even start working in the field.

Like him, I’m still working on ‘breaking into” the industry and finding where I fit.

If I had written on this topic, I would like to think I would have written your words almost verbatim. As a Sound Designer, a Teacher and a former everything related to audio production person I have to give your analysis an A+. Some people really beat up on the idea of an audio education, others rely on it as a golden parachute. The truth is somewhere in the middle, and completely guided by perseverance and attitude. Please feel free to write more articles April, I will read them when you do.

Loved the insight, and also resonated a lot with it. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us April. As a person who is still churning the milk to make butter, articles like this one help keep me on track and focused.

Thanks Again
Graham
