Thanks, Randy! That’s definitely something I’d like to try sometime and see how that works for me. So basically the sound designer gets to work during pre-production and gives some ideas to the writer or director? Or is it from previous work but provides a sort of sketch of an idea?

I just wanted to add that I’m finding more and more directors and writers open to the idea of being inspired by listening to sound effects / sound design in pre-production, as well as music. That kind of listening can inform what you shoot and how you shoot it. The result can often be a dance between sound and image that is organic, collaborative, and compelling.
