So nice to read an article of this nature. It seems like the whole synthesis world is in love with analog right now but I have been experimenting with many of your same sample based ideas for the last 6 years and I feel that the real way forward is in sample based synthesis techniques. I have designed a sample engine that is similar in some respects to Izotope Iris and have been exploring with it for three years now. Your techniques have much todo with the heart of this engine. It is refreshing to see that there are like minded individuals out there. If you have a Windows machine I would give you a copy in Vsti format … let me know if you are interested.

This is a fantastic exercise in developing critical and active listening skills and can (should) be done over and over again with a different initial sound source throughout a sound professional’s career. This would be a nice way to get into listening to sounds as just the sound, and removing the actual sound from the source (breaking the signifier/signified semiotic relationship [see Shaun Farley’s article: https://designingsound.org/2012/08/ideas-in-sound-design-semitotics-and-language-part-1/ ]). And for the more experienced sound designers out there, this is a great warm up or practice to get your creativity flowing if you ever have a “sound designers block”. Thanks again for writing and posting this.
