The old standard was -27 LEQ-A, and peaks were limited to -10 dBFS. This was just the most common standard, and (as you mentioned) there were definitely variations on those numbers.

Is there a specific standard for a mix when an A-weighted filter is applied? I have done work for a few different broadcast companies that had different A-weighted mix requirements. Do you know the general range audio loudness should be when A-weighted filter is applied?

@David Prouty: I’m not at all involved with doing stuff for broadcast, so take the following with as many pinches of salt as you deem fit.

AFAIK what to do with non-compliant material remains at the discretion of broadcasters. The most obvious consequence is that material can simply be turned down, so will sound smaller.

On the other hand, I’ve noticed some adverts on the UK’s Channel 4 online service, 4OD, that appear to be violently band-passed (and sound terrible), which I’ve assumed is a brute force – and nasty – way of enforcing compliance.

Good to know. From what I gathered we will need to make this happen or suffer loss of airplay??? Is that correct? …. Sheesh I wished there was a tool to just make it happen.
