The space is important, and since I was talking about ambient audio, the space is very important, as they need to sit back and not dominate. But finding the right sounds is more complex than finding sounds that have the correct spacialization. I think Randy was alluding to it in his comments. The sound he chose had the right acoustic space in the sound as it was recorded with the space as part of the sound, but I would say the sound was chosen firstly because it felt right for the scene emotionally. It had the particular qualities of sound which simulate or reference or invoke what the world would sound like when heard through the filter of the emotional state of whoever was holding the point-of-view for that scene.
That is one of the aspects of Randy’s work that I hold in the highest esteem, and a perspective I hope is always present in my work.

And also, great tip from Randy. I totally agree. There are so many great sounds to capture which need a minimum of editing. Why try to change a sound that just isn’t what you are lookng for?
