Jeff may not see this soon, so I’ll respond to this one re: middle-ware. The two major third party tools right now are Wwise and FMOD. Both can be downloaded and experimented with for free (licensing fees are paid when they are actually used in a game). So, they can be good resources to get your feet wet. Another option is the Unreal Engine. While not exclusively an audio tool, it has audio tools as well and is a popular game engine.
