I seem to remember watching an interview a long time ago saying that it was the sound that some old pipes were making… which funny enough one of the old places I used to work at had pipes that made the same noise every once in a while while you were in the men’s restroom.. all of a sudden you’d hear the predator noise… it had just the right amount of reverb and everything to really make it sound like it did in the movie.. it quite literally would scare the Sh!t out of you. (for a brief second!) I remember one of the new guys jumping out of his skin the first time he heard it… cracked me up!

As much for the sounds as the action. Thanks! Nearly 25 years on and its still not getting old on me. :)

Wow, great interview. A fair chunk is a little out of my league but still, i find it fascinating to read, learn and – maybe most important of all – be able to appreciate how much work is put into creating these sounds and effects. Im actually sitting watching the film reading this (almost in time with some segments of the interview) and now ive finally learned the “secret” behinde the sound of “ol’ painless” aka Blains Minigun (which Mac is about to fire hehe). That sound is my probably favourite, the one i will never forget. Its sooo heavy! And perfect for the gun. You can almost feel it hitting you in the chest with a good surround system and copi us volume. :) Ive heard the true sound it makes and its slightly dissapointing as id seen the movie first. Hehe

David, im afraid i dont have any questions that will really test you but ive read somewhere that Pred-a-vision “whomp” also sampled a whip, true? Maybe not, as you never mentioned it but i can see why some would think thats the case. :)

Im going to college next fall, maybe i should look into sound design? The creative, sometimes slightly/very leftfield solutions sound like (no pun intended) fun and a challenge. Actually, i do have a question: is it hard to get hired in that line of work? Regards, N.A.

You’ve asked a great question, Ryan.
I’m going to have to think about it for a bit, and I will post an answer soon. Meanwhile, thanks for reading this.

It’s awesome to read about how the sound was put together. Great article. Thanks.

I’m appreciative of how easy we have it with our digital technology. In the day’s of analog they were truly Sound ‘Engineers’.
