I’m sorry not to have responded sooner but I only just saw your comment. No, I’m in the same boat you are. It would take an inordinate amount of time to go through any professional library and master all multi-track recordings into mono. Usually, what I do is create two mono audio tracks and one or more stereo’s that I can move clips onto from the region bin. Obviously, the mono files typically go on mono tracks and stereo files onto the stereo track. As you asked, though, sometimes I only want one side of a stereo effect, or the center channel of a 5-channel effect, etc. The mono tracks only have center mono output capability so whether the sound is mono or stereo, there’s no panning available for them. By the way, there are two of them so I don’t have to open the little triangle icon as you mentioned; just drag the stereo effect onto the two mono tracks and delete the side you don’t want. Then I cut them up as needed and move them to an appropriate “final resting place” on a predub organized audio track elsewhere in the session and pan them as needed.
Best wishes,
Bruce

Really enjoyed all your tutorials. It’s now almost 1am and was hoping for an early night but got hooked in lol Great stuff and so much appreciated that you took time out to answer the questions.

One little one from me if you have time though.. Most of my SFX library comes in stereo files, and for hard effects its preferable to have them in mono to pan etc. I find that importing the files in Pro Tools region bin (after opening up the little triangle for the clip) then dragging the L or R channel onto a track an inelegant way of things. I always seem to have to reposition the panning from hard left/right to centre before anything else. Do you convert a lot of your library to mono first before using them in Pro Tools?

Question open to anyone else of course ;)
Many thanks, Bruce. Hope to hear more from you soon.

Im glad to hear you value BGs a lot. Personally they are possibly my favourite thing to cut and I love layering backgrounds for each location and often have found myself creating backgrounds after reading a script long before the film has even been shot! (When I am lucky to get on board early enough) Nowadays backgrounds tend to get mixed very low and I think they are much more important than what the respect they get in the mixes.

Anyways, thanks for a month of great articles and best of luck in all future projects!
