I made these mistakes in a few of my first assignments and really tried to avoid making them (well . . .mostly :P) in my final 20 minute portfolio for my final year. Some really great tips. I remember when we first started studying Sound Design we didn’t even think of doing anything *other* than Literal sounds – Footsteps, movement, wind etc. That leads to a really dull and bland atmosphere!

Excellent post! Invaluable information for both novice and the veteran. I often find myself making some of these exact mistakes.  Love the comparison’s to music composition and arrangement.
