The fourth annual FilmSoundHamburg got under way in Hamburg on Sunday evening – an event that will bring together enthusiasts from the worlds of sound design, film composition and game music for five days of workshops and seminars and masterclasses.
Among the highlights will be four separate masterclasses given by Tim Nielsen of Skywalker Sound (Maleficient, Lord of the the Rings, John Carter), and composers Olivier Deriviére (Assassin’s Creed IV, Remember Me), Javier Navarrete (Pan’s Labyrinth, Mirrors, Hemmingway & Gellhorn) and Lisle Moore (who has composed trailer music for Maleficient and the last three FIFA World Cups). In addition, a number of workshops and seminars will also be taking place.
FilmSoundHamburg takes place from June 29th until July 4th in Hamburg, Germany. Some places are still available so check the website for the full programme and price list.

As Designing Sound’s month devoted to Silence comes to an end, what better time to take a look at a remarkable video course that delves into the vast and interesting world of effective sound recording.
The Sound Recording Workshop (video/audio series) comes to us from Sound Librarian and presenter Stephan Schütze.

The Royal School of Arts in Gent, Belgium, is holding six full days of listening technique and research this February and March. Elias Vervecken (sound recordist and foley artist) and Els Viaene (sound artist and field recordist) will each lead a three day workshop on listening, focusing on different relationships to the environment.
Starting from the point of silence, Elias Vervecken will investigate how noise can be made tangible and question how this relates to creating sound for image. Using the natural landscape as her starting point, Els Viaene will guide participants through investigation of the microphone as a subjective expression (rather than neutral observer) of the environment, and question how evocative aural pictures might then be combined with visuals.
The workshops will take place on 20-22 February and 20-22 March, respectively, from 10.00-18.00. The cost is EUR150.00 each or EUR250.00 if you attend both.

The creation of sound is a very specific area of production requiring unique skills that can take time to learn through practise. Some people like myself take part in University courses to help get the skills and knowledge required to perform to the exacting standards required of the industry. I have a Masters Degree in Sound Design. I learnt many important skills and work practices and industry requirements doing that Masters, and it stood me in good stead entering the industry. But this industry is constantly evolving and there are many methods and techniques to achieve results on the varied productions in which we are involved. Finding ways to further yourself and your skills becomes very important.
Last year I attended a workshop presented by Stephan Schütze of Sound Librarian on sound effects recording, It was enlightening to witness how much knowledge and experience can be shared in just one day if an experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic communicator takes you through their world. I am fairly experienced when it comes to recording sound effects, as it is a passion of mine, but I still learnt a number of things that had not occurred to me previously, many of which I went on to implement in my work. So this year, when I found out Sound Librarian was planning to do it again, I immediately signed up to lend a hand.
DS readers in and around Melbourne, Australia should check out the upcoming Sound Librarian Recording Workshop at Docklands Studio. This FREE, all-day event, headed by noted Sound Designer Stephan Schütze, will offer a hands-on look at a number of useful recording and Foley techniques. The event will take place at an enormous, world-class sound stage, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own recording gear.
