Sound Design Inspiration from Outer Space

A few months ago I came across a Twitter post made by Stephan Schütze (a recent Designing Sound contributor) that continues to resonate with me (no pun intended) and I wanted to share it with anyone in the sound design community that has yet to hear these sounds.

As a side note, Stephan’s tweet was unrelated to his Designing Sound contribution (which can be found here) that he wrote for our monthly theme dedicated to Vehicles.

The original Twitter post was for an article entitled:

NASA Probes Record Sounds In Space – And It’s Terrifying.

I was immediately enthralled as soon as I heard the sounds. Opposed to my previous beliefs, outer space actually does produce sound, and the sounds are quite remarkable.

Beep: A Documentary History of Video Game Sound – Kickstarter Announced

Karen Collins, author and editor of four books on video game audio, and an accomplished sound designer in her own right, is currently directing the production of Beep, the very first documentary history of video game music and sound design. This ambitious project aims to cover the history of game audio, from Victorian mechanical arcades through today’s orchestral performances. The film will cover topics ranging from the psychology of game audio, to the use of game sound technology in pop music and other arenas, along with interviews featuring trailblazers and groundbreakers from every era of video games history.

The team is currently soliciting donations via Kickstarter. If you are interested in learning more, or in contributing to the project, check the Beep Kickstarter page.

Remembering Alan Splet

One of the main reasons to start this site back in 2008 and also one of the things that keeps me motivated to do this is the impact that some people had in my life; curiously, people who I haven’t met in person, but I’ve deeply met with my ears.

I’m talking about those sound designers who created initial routes for all of us and started to develop a truly amazing way of working with sound, by establishing the essence of this art, not just from a technical perspective but an emotional, narrative and even spiritual one. I’m so glad to make this post about about one of those sound genius, a person that I know many of us deeply admire, Alan Splet.

He had the main faculties any sound designer needs to have, as described by Splet’s widow Ann Kroeber: “attention to detail, nuance, perseverance, ability to vastly influence the mood of a scene by the choice and placement of sounds”.
