News: Dolby Institute “Conversations with Sound Artists” Podcast Series

We as a community are lucky to have a number of amazingly informative resources available to us, and podcasts count among the most popular. Well, add a new one to your listening list: the Dolby Institute, in conjunction with SoundWorks Collection, is presenting a limited number of podcasts in a series entitled “Conversations with Sound Artists”. News: The Sound of Killer Instinct, Season 2

In a recent video, some members of the Killer Instinct sound team, including Zachary Quarles, Adam Isgreen, Mick Gordon, Chase Ashbaker, and Jeff Dombkowski, discuss some of the unique approaches and techniques they used in creating the sounds for some of the new characters featured in the second season of the game, including how they created fire effects, scarab attacks, and raptor vocals.

And if that’s not enough enticement, you also get to hear Mick Gordon throat-sing!

Actors of Sound, A Foley Art Documentary, now on Kickstarter

As many of our readers know, sound design is frequently overlooked when people start talking in-depth about media production. It’s no surprise, then, that we here at Designing Sound get pretty excited when we find out someone is taking a closer look at an element of the craft. In that spirit, we wanted to bring your attention to a Kickstarter forĀ Actors of Sound: A Foley Art Documentary. This film by director Lalo Molina and his team (listed on the KS page) seeks to bring attention to the human and performance elements of foley, as well as the fantastic artists who do it, but they need your help to produce the movie. As part of our continuing goal of promoting greater cross-discipline learning with media editing site Art of the Guillotine (Aotg.com), we’d like to bring your attention to their recent article Audio Levels and Metering: Pt. 1. SoundWorks Collection: The Sound of The Idealist

In a recent video, SoundWorks Collection speaks to Sound Designer (and Designing Sound Contributing Editor) Peter Albrechtsen and Sound Rerecording Mixer Lars Ginzel about their work on the Danish film “The Idealist”. In the video, they discuss their uniquely sonic approach to the film, which concerns a journalist who exposes the biggest political scandal in Danish history. They also discuss the film’s use of Dolby Atmos and the opportunities it afforded them.
