What is Designing Sound Exchange?
Designing Sound Exchange is a discussion area modeled on what the Social Sound Design site used to be; a self moderated place where people can ask questions about gear, technique and aesthetics. Any member can ask a question, and any member can answer. You can show your appreciation for a question or answer by voting it up. When someone posts an answer to your question that gives you exactly the information you needed, you can select it as the answer. That answer will stay at the top of the response thread, giving other users quick access to the answer without having to hunt through the thread. The most popular answers (those with the most votes) will show up just below the answer, or…if an answer hasn’t been selected yet…just below the question itself. The thing that made Social Sound Design special was that it was a focused community that centered around sound designers. It’s not a place for DJ’s to talk about turn-tables or music production, and it’s not a place for people to ask about home A/V systems…unless it possibly pertains to deliverables for a sound design project. This is place for film, games, TV, art installations, theater, and maybe the wacky sound making contraption or two. Many of the people who used the SSD site wanted to see something like it created again. So that’s what we’ve done.
What are the rules?
Basically, don’t be a jerk. No offensive material, no personal attacks, and no flame wars. It’s ok to disagree with someone, and tell them that, but it can be done in a constructive way…like the adults we all are. If you’re a jerk, you’ll be banned. Also, please honor what this space is. See the lines about what DSE is and is not in the paragraph just before this.
Can I advertise my services or sound effects libraries?
No. This is not the place for that. We’re all sound designers here. If someone needs help with something, they can ask. Then you can respond and say, “Hey, I can do that!” Same thing applies if someone asks for specific suggestions regarding sound effects libraries. If you’ve got one that matches the need someone is asking about, then go ahead and post about it in an answer. Otherwise, you can share your latest sound effects libraries here.
See? We can be reasonable.
How do I register or log in?
You’ll find the “Meta” heading in the footer of every page. You can register or login there. You can also go straight to asking a question, or click on one. You’ll find “Login” and “Sign Up” links there on the page (or bottom of the thread of answers). Easy!
I’ve registered/requested a password reset, but haven’t gotten an e-mail.
Check your spam folder.
What’s this reputation thing, and how do I earn it?
It tracks how active you are on the site. It goes up when you do things like ask a question, answer one, leave a comment, up vote someone else’s question or answer, have yours voted up, select an answer posted in your question, have your answer selected in someone else’s question, etc. It can also go down though; for instance, if you vote down someone else’s questions or answers, or your’s are voted down. Those penalties are small. The big penalty is if something you’ve posted gets flagged by a lot of people. So make sure you’re posts are good ones!
When should I answer, and when should I comment?
If you’ve got information that actually answers, partially or all, post that as an answer. If you’re just asking for additional clarifying information, or want to say you appreciate or disagree with something in a post…that’s better off as a comment.
How can I edit my post (question/answer/comment) to update it, or even delete it if I’m so embarassed by what I typed?
In the bottom of your post, next to “Comment” and “Status” there’s a little blue field with three white dots in it. That’s the “More Action” button. Click on that and a drop down menu will appear. It’s even easier with comments, an “Edit” link sits right next to it.
Should I use tags?
Yes. Always. It will help others find related questions, or maybe discover that their question has already been asked before. You can add tags when you’re asking a question. There’s an input box just below where you enter the body of your question. Typing there and hitting [enter/return] or [,] will add the tag to your post.
How do I flag a question, answer or comment?
Click the More Action button on a question or answer, and select “Flag” from the pop up menu. For comments, the link is sitting right there. See the photos directly above. Please be responsible with this feature and only flag instances where people are being aforementioned jerks, posting something way off topic, are blatantly self-promoting/advertising, or for obvious spam. Thanks!
How do I embed videos or sounds?
The site currently allows Youtube, Vimeo and Soundcloud embeds. All you have to do is paste a direct link into your post. Boom! No fancy embed codes or anything needed. Please note:
- Make sure the link is on its own line; otherwise, it will just show up as a dumb text url.
- If you later choose to edit a question/answer that has an embed, it may lose the embed when you hit “Save/Update.” Delete the embed, and re-paste the link while editing to avoid this!
Can I embed polls?
The site currently allows Poll Daddy polls. The procedure is the same as for video or sounds. Just paste a direct link into your post; no embed codes required. The same cavéats as video and sound embeds apply here (link on it’s own line, loss while editing previously posted item).
How do I add hyperlinks?
This one is a little tricky, because no pop-up appears. We haven’t been able to change that either. You CAN add a hyperlink to text though. Here’s the procedure:
- Copy the url to your clipboard.
- In your post, highlight the text that you want to serve as a link.
- It is recommended that you already have more text after it, if you intend to keep typing after the link.
- Paste from your clipboard. Literally, just hit Cmd/Ctrl+V.
- You’re done. Don’t hit enter or anything else. Just click outside of the hyperlink to continue typing. You should see the typical underline behavior appear if you’ve done it correctly.
If you have problems getting this to work, then just paste the URL into your post.
Can I turn off notification e-mails for new answers to my question, or new comments on my questions and answers?
Unfortunately, no. We haven’t figured out how to make WordPress or the plug-ins that run DSE allow that. Most likely, they’ll be going to your spam folder though. So, hopefully, that won’t be an issue for most people. Unless you want to see those e-mails; in which case, set up some filters.
Is there an RSS feed for the questions I can subscribe to?
Yes! You can use this url: http://designingsound.org/exchange/feed/?post_type=question
Who are the moderators, and how can I contact them?
Jay Jennings, Steve Urban, and any of the Designing Sound editors that you see over here. If you need to reach out to the moderators for something other than flagged items (don’t worry, we’ll see those without help), head to this page here and leave a comment.
